The integrated inter-tenancy stairs supported the key design intent for a connected workplace.
Overview
Health Department staff from 11 various health agencies around Sydney have been collocated into this purpose built development comprising a 10 storey office building with 2 stories of carparking. Leading engineering and project management firm enstruct took the project to tender and then partnered with award winning global builder Multiplex to complete the construction documentation stage and construct the building. The building included an integrated fitout allowing the facility to be constructed to the exact and evolving requirements of the tenant. This also allowed for the inter-tenancy stairs to be efficiently integrated within the base building documentation.
One of the major objectives of the client brief was to create a connected workspace – a workplace environment with collaboration and interaction between individual staff, the various
organisations within the building, and with the broader client and business group.
Sited on the southern portion of the Royal North Shore Hospital campus in St Leonards, the SHOR development accommodates the NSW Ministry of Health and a number of related organisations under the aegis of NSW Health. The feasibility and planning work indicated that the co-location of these health entities would provide more opportunities for effective collaboration and increased efficiency through the use of shared resources and infrastructure.
Supporting the collaborative intent of the client and designers BVN, are the eight inter-tenancy stairs. Designed, fabricated and installed by Active Metal, these stairs were completed off-site and hoisted into the building as modular sections and reassembled. Consisting of a plate steel integrated balustrade, the feature of the right angle versions was the “bird cage” vertical rods around the circular mid landing. Handrails to the stairs and void balustrades were from Australian hardwood. In contrast to the main stair design, the entry stair also by Active was finish clad in marble for a more prestigious aesthetic.
Delivering a turnkey package, Active Metal also completed the structural glass balustrade to each of the stair voids.
An awesome connected workplace and an intelligently executed integrated fitout.
