The mesh balustrade gives the switchback staircase the aura of transparency and lightness.
Opening their first offices in Melbourne over 125 years ago, Maddocks have now expanded across the country with offices in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. With a team continually growing, Maddocks required a new office that would be able to grow and change as the company did. Moving just six floors up, the newly leased floors were in dire need of a refresh and Hassell Studio certainly rose to the challenge.
Designed to greatly enhance the contemporary theme of the new office, Hassell’s fitout design included a cantilevered switchback staircase that utilised current design trends such as mesh balustrades and painted handrails. Creating a central connection, this staircase is light and almost ethereal as a result of the mesh balustrade. Active Metal overcame accessibility issues and completed all of the structural steel requirements, balustrades, handrails and finishes for this impressive showpiece stair. The electric blue vinyl flooring added a stunning contract to the black finishes of the stair and lifted the design to a higher level. The perforated acoustic soffit linings were the perfect complement to the mesh balustrade.
Stair designs that make the most of the available space are highly valued and can ensure that a dynamic and visually impressive shape can be incorporated in your next fitout design. All the different option can be viewed in our Stair Styles pages and specifically the Switchback design.
Designers should consider the benefits of using mesh balustrades in their next design and more information on this subject can be reviewed here.
