Overview
The Commonwealth Tenancy Fit-out project brought together Cox Architecture, Morris Property Group, and Active Metal to create a remarkable stair design that showcases the epitome of modern design.
Situated on the outskirts of Brisbane’s CBD, this state-of-the-art staircase not only serves as a central connecting element but also redefines architectural excellence.
The staircase aimed to seamlessly blend functionality and aesthetics, connecting 13 floors within a new 26-storey building. It featured three double stair stairs and two single stairs, with a striking 5.5-meter diameter helical stair as the centrepiece. The collaboration between Cox Architecture, Morris Property Group, and Active Metal ensured meticulous design finalisation to meet the highest standards of modern architecture.
Challenges like time constraints and limited access required innovative approaches to the fabrication and installation process. Active Metal overcame these obstacles by employing modular prepared sections and a detailed propping set-out, allowing the staircase to be fully fabricated onsite. Despite these difficulties, the project was completed ahead of schedule, a testament to the expertise and commitment of the teams involved. The result was an impeccable finish that surpassed all expectations.
A defining feature of the Commonwealth Tenancy staircase is the distinctive “drum” design of the 12mm steel void balustrade. This minimalist alternative to a solid plaster wall balustrade offers a sleek aesthetic while serving a vital structural role in supporting the weight of the stair. The plate balustrade to the voids adds strength and stability, showcasing the seamless integration of form and function.
Active Metal’s dedication to providing an exceptional client experience is evident in their commitment to prototyping and client engagement. Prior to fabrication, the in-house design and engineering teams created a full-scale prototype of the staircase’s architecture. This unique prototype review process allowed the client to actively participate in the design and fabrication journey, ensuring their vision and requirements were met at every stage.
Subtle colours in the spiral staircase’s soffit add depth and meaning to the design. The stair design, inspired by Australian Native flora, has a carefully selected colour palette symbolises growth, aligning with the concept for the new workplace. This thoughtful inclusion infuses the space with vitality, fostering an environment conducive to creativity and innovation.
