Evoking a sense of social meeting in the workspace, the stair design in Gilbert + Tobin’s Melbourne office organically facilitates agile collaboration and breaks down the formal barrier between the law firm and the client.

Consolidating the Melbourne office to the classic corporate landmark 101 Collins St, a place where many influential companies headquarter. Not only is 101 Collins St a formidable address, but it also offers intuitively refined services and deep connection with Melbourne’s cultural heart. In order to streamline the law firm’s national workplace design intent, Woods Bagot was engaged to design Gilbert + Tobin’s Melbourne office. An open plan design with integrated organic elements across the floorplate maximises the natural views while boosting staff well being. Micro communities have been created via a diversity of workspaces with the stairs promoting team movement and collaboration between the floors.

Complementing the neutral palette and biophilic design, the stair design serves as a centrepiece to the overall plan. Underscoring the physical and visual connectivity of the workplace, the interconnecting stairs provide a scale to the design intent. The indoor garden planter feature was inspired by the Australian landscape and serves to anchor the space with a juxtaposition to the modern style of the staircase. Timber treads contrast the glazed balustrades and the stark white of the soffit and stringers. Well designed and well executed, this workspace is both inspirational and timeless.
