Overview
Active Metal’s Melbourne team recently fabricated and installed a custom curved metal staircase, connecting Levels 22 and 23 in Beca’s Melbourne Quarter Tower office. This staircase, positioned in the heart of the workspace, provides seamless access between floors while enhancing the open, collaborative nature of Beca’s new office, which was designed by Gray Puksand and built by Renascent.
Gray Puksand’s architectural vision, titled “A Place of Possibility,” celebrates themes of balance and connection—principles that align with Beca’s values of teamwork and innovation. The staircase not only serves as a practical feature but as a central design element, promoting movement and interaction across the office’s collaborative zones, Town Hall, and various formal and informal meeting spaces.
The design integrates sustainable practices, reflecting the cultural and environmental significance of Melbourne Quarter for the Woiworung People. With sustainability as a priority, the project utilises low-carbon materials and aims to achieve WELL certification, incorporating biophilic design elements that connect employees to nature. Authentic Australian materials, including granite, recycled plastics, green ceramics, and spotted gum veneer, reinforce the workspace’s strong environmental values.
In line with the project’s focus on sustainability, the staircase was constructed with an eye on minimising waste, using durable, low-carbon materials suitable for future disassembly. Positioned centrally, the staircase facilitates clear sightlines and enhances connectivity, offering views of open work areas along the office perimeter while contributing to an inclusive, wellness-centered environment.
Active Metal worked closely in the concept stages to develop the design intent and bring Beca’s vision to life through this staircase, which fosters connections to place, culture, and the environment.
