Solid timber treads with exposed plate riser
A hard wearing alternative with an attractive definition between the colour of the riser and the timber front edge. Popular Australian hardwoods that are used in the treads include Spotted Gum and Blackbutt. Other species are possible subject to mill availability. All timber sourced from certified, sustainable mills.
*Note – large landing areas will be installed as planks to avoid shrinkage issues where possible.
Solid timber
Using solid timber for both risers and treads is also a popular and hard wearing alternative.Popular Australian hardwoods that are used in the treads include Spotted Gum and Blackbutt. Other species are possible subject to mill availability. All timber sourced from certified, sustainable mills.
*Note – large landing areas will be installed as planks to avoid shrinkage issues where possible.
Engineered board
The use of engineered board for treads and risers has grown in popularity with the rise in this materials availability. Constructed of a plywood substrate with a 4-6mm laminate of solid timber, this material overcomes any shrinkage issues associated with solid timber. Available primarily in European Oak in a range of colours and finishes, Active can assist with the selection of a suitable engineered board alternative.
Exposed plate riser with rubber
For a minimalist or industrial look, exposed plate is great though the painted surfaces are subject to wear and scuffing. Due consideration of this aspect should be given if incorporating a similar design detail in your new stair.
Exposed plate riser with treadplate
Definitely an industrial look, the mix of treadplate and exposed plate is only for some applications and design themes.
Exposed plate riser with carpet tile
A common and cost effective alternative. Any standard carpet tile could be used here and primarily is used to continue a design theme throughout a fitout.
Timber riser with carpet tile
Where these finishes are in use throughout a fitout, this is a great way to bring them together to add warmth to the staircase appearance.
Continuous vinyl
Generally used where a cost effective finish is required, continuous or roll vinyl is a hard wearing surface with a myriad of designs and colours. Not often used on centrepiece stairs.
Woven vinyl
The enduring popularity of woven vinyls such as Bolon and 2Tec2 and other leading brands has seen this material installed on many staircases. With an enormous range of colours and variations, this finish is mostly used to continue finishes used throughout the fitout to pull the whole design theme together.
Rubber – one piece formed
Available as standard off the shelf modules and also as custom made for larger projects, one piece formed sections can be either a complete tread and riser or just a tread and nosing. A very durable and tough alternative with a definite advantage over traditional methods due to the time saving in laying.
Available in limited colours and patterns.
Rubber – tile tread and riser
A hardwearing, durable alternative, with a vast range of colours and textures available.
Polished Concrete
A more uncommon alternative, polished concrete treads are completely custom and are cast specifically for the project. While they won’t work for every stair, concrete treads are low maintenance and virtually indestructible, delivering an aesthetic that is unique.
Glass
Glass treads are not common and are a more costly alternative requiring very specific design parameters in the stairs. Typically constructed from triple or quadruple laminated toughened glass, generally they will also incorporate a cerafic surface treatment to meet the requirements of the NCC.
