The plate steel spiral stair is like a beautiful sculpture, a masterpiece of simplicity and classic form!
Overview
The new Zurich Australian head office situated at 118 Mount St North Sydney was a major move for the global insurer. In the words of Tim Bailey, CEO, “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to develop a workplace that is tailored to the needs of our people and our customers.”
The 29-storey A-grade tower, designed by architects FJMT and built by Roberts Pizzarotti is in a prime North Sydney location with unimpeded views to the Bridge, CBD and Harbour, and is set to become one of North Sydney’s most prestigious locations alongside the also recently completed 100 Mount St and 1 Denison St.

Inside, in the fitout designed by Hassell and delivered by MPA, design is everything. Blending their needs with the best of workplace design, the new dynamic working spaces will benefit from abundant natural light and be tailored to the needs of both employees and customers. And while the fitout covers several floors, the standout is the rooftop terrace, and more significantly, the spiral stair that takes you there!
Occupying just over 12sqm, this helical or spiral stair was the most practical design spatially. While it is about as small as a stair can be, it still satisfies every requirement of the building code and standards. The key to the success of the design is the integrated steel plate balustrade as it adds very little to the overall dimension of the stair. With an integrated plate balustrade to the void, we think that this stair is about as neat as it gets!
Looking more like a sculptural work of art than a commercial staircase, this spiral stair serves as a centrepiece for the client experience floor and gives a direct connection to the roof terrace…
